This product is a trisaccharide that is identical to what is naturally present in human milk and is comprised of L-fucose, D-galactose and D-glucose.

GlycoActiveTM 3FL holds regulatory approval in the European Union as a Novel Food under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, and has obtained GRAS (Generally Recognised As Safe) status in the United States (GRN 951). These approvals cover a broad range of food and nutritional applications, including infant formula, food supplements, and foods for special medical purposes.

This distinctive profile is further reinforced by its strong presence in non-secretor milk, where 2'FL is barely detectable, positioning 3FL as the primary fucosylated HMO in the non-secretor population 2.

The science behind 3FL

The biological activity of 3FL spans several areas of early life health, each supported by preclinical and emerging scientific evidence. In the gut, 3FL has been reported to support gut wall and barrier function, and may act as a prebiotic for beneficial early-stage Bifidobacterium subspecies such as B. infantis and B. longum, as well as later-stage Lactobacillus and Bacteroides species, suggesting a role across different phases of microbiome development 3.

Preclinical evidence suggests that 3FL may have anti-inflammatory potential, including studies showing that 3FL, in combination with 2'FL, may help strengthen gut barrier function and attenuate colitis-associated injury in animal models 4. Additionally, published research suggests that 3FL may help reduce the risk of harmful microbes adhering to intestinal and respiratory cells 5.

Both 3FL and 2’FL are mono-focusylated HMOs, but differ in the type of fucose-lactose linkage. Unlike most HMOs, which decrease in concentration as lactation progresses, 3FL is the only HMO that increases throughout lactation, reaching its highest levels in mature and late milk. It is also particularly abundant in non-secretor milk, making it the primary fucosylated HMO for approximately 20% of the population.
