DFL (Difucosyllactose)
Difucosyllactose or DFL is the simplest HMO containing both the secretor fucose as well as the lewis focuse. As such, it mimics the Lewis Y-epitope which gives rise to histo-blood group A & B antigens (HBGA).
Knowing that the mode of infection of many viruses and bacteria is through a binding on a HBGA, DFL promises great potential as a decoy receptor, thereby protecting us against these pathogens.
